What fleet telematics actually measures — and what it does not

Telematics is often sold as visibility. It is more useful to think of it as a measurement system with known strengths and known blind spots.

Position is the input, not the product

Every telematics deployment starts with a stream of positions: coordinates, speed, heading and ignition state, reported at intervals. On its own that stream tells you very little. It becomes useful once the platform turns it into trips, stops, idle periods and zone crossings — structures a person can reason about.

This matters when comparing systems. The difference between two platforms is rarely the accuracy of the underlying position; it is how faithfully raw positions are converted into the operational concepts a fleet actually manages.

What the data supports well

Some questions are answered directly and reliably by position and ignition data alone, with no additional hardware and little interpretation:

  • Where a vehicle was at a given time, and by what route it got there
  • How long it stood at a location, and whether the engine was running
  • How far it travelled in a period, and how that compares with its peers
  • Whether it entered or left a defined zone, and when

What needs extra inputs

Other questions look similar but depend on hardware beyond the tracker. Fuel consumption needs a level sensor or a CAN bus reading. Temperature needs a sensor per compartment. Attributing behaviour to a driver rather than a vehicle needs identification hardware or a reliable roster.

Deployments disappoint most often when a requirement in the second category was scoped as if it were in the first. Establishing which inputs each reporting requirement depends on, before ordering hardware, prevents almost all of that disappointment.

The blind spots worth naming

Telematics does not observe the cab. It does not know why a vehicle stopped for forty minutes, whether a delay was the driver's fault or a customer's, or whether a harsh braking event avoided a collision. It records that these things happened.

Treating the data as a prompt for a conversation rather than as a verdict is what separates fleets where telematics improves performance from fleets where it mainly damages trust.
